rental alternatives

17 Jul

i’m excited about our venue, but one of the best things about it–that it’s a raw space with only tables and chairs provided–is also one of the challenging things about it. we are looking at a whole. lot. of. rentals. and, as i’ve learned since we’ve booked the joint, rentals are almost as expensive as buying the damn things.

solution? we’re thinking about thrifting everything, going on one big ikea spree, or some combination of the two.

my preference at this point? thrifting as much as possible (most likely plates and dishes) and buying some new pieces (possibly glassware). it’s enough to a) not be totally and utterly wasteful, b) collect enough pieces for 120 without making it a full-time job, and c) have some semblance of cohesion.

the challenges? collecting enough items, of course, and figuring out what to do with everything after the wedding. i read that most caterers are willing to scrape and pack your dishware for you, but the washing is up to you. since we plan to jet off to somewhere fabulous a day or two after the wedding, we will need to figure out a solution to that problem, since there are more romantic things to come home to as husband and wife than 120 crusty place settings.

i have had a fun time trolling ikea.com for ideas, though. i think that these would make adorable water glasses for a casual place setting:

in other news, tomorrow is the big bridal garden trip. i’m still feeling really excited about the blue gown, but i’ll keep you posted. photos and stories to come. xo

Very cute glasses. You know, I might know someone selling glasses. I’ll get back to you on that.

cool, please do let me know. we’re on the fence about buying vs. renting glassware, but i’d be happy to check out whatever your contact has. we’re hosting about 120.

I love the idea of a combination of thrift shop plate and ikea stuff. We went on an ikea spree for our wedding and it was so fun!

thanks! we were just there yesterday on an unrelated trip, but spied a few things that could be useful. the flatware is crazy inexpensive.
